You want something easy and classic, you want sloe gin.

Sloe gin is a glorious liqueur made by steeping sloe berries in gin with just a touch of sweetness. In the fall, dark blue and purple clusters of sloe berries grow on thorny Blackthorn trees common in hedgerows across Europe. Sloes are highly astringent but when macerated in gin, they lend warming bitter sweetness and fresh acidity to the resulting liqueur.

Happily, four ingredients are all that is needed to make sloe gin: sloe berries, gin, sugar and patience! We start by distilling gin, then infuse it with wild sloe berries. Adding sugar helps to release the sloe berries’ entire flavor spectrum and vibrant hues into the gin. The result is a mahogany colored liqueur combining ripe sweetness with fresh acidity.

Delicious, dark and warming, sloe gin was traditionally enjoyed in the depths of winter, but its unique color and flavor also combine wonderfully with a wide variety of spirits to make spectacular cocktails.

inspirations

moulin rouge

  • 2 parts pür•spirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part red vermouth
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters

Stir ingredients with ice in a mixing glass. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with orange zest.

sloe gin fizz

  • 1.5 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.75 parts fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 2 parts soda water
  • 1 fresh egg white (optional)

Combine lemon juice and sugar in a shaker, stir to dissolve sugar, add pürspirits blackthorn and egg white. Fill shaker with ice, shake well fsor 10 seconds, strain into a highball glass and top with soda water.

  • 1 part mezcal blanco
  • 0.75 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.5 parts Aperol
  • 0.5 parts Cynar

Combine all ingredients, stir and strain into a Nick and Nora glass, express a blood orange twist over the drink and drop in.

  • 1.5 parts gin
  • 1 part grapefruit juice
  • 0.75 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • absinthe rinse

Shake gin, sloe gin, and grapefruit juice with ice, then strain into a chilled coupe rinsed with absinthe.

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part sweet vermouth
  • 1 egg white
  • dash cherry liqueur
  • dash orange bitters

Shake ingredients vigorously with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with grated nutmeg.

mojito

  • 2 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 10 basil leaves
  • 1 lime
  • brown sugar
  • soda

In a rocks glass, muddle 9 basil leaves, lime (sliced in wedges), and brown sugar. Fill with ice and top with sloe gin and soda. Stir and and garnish with a wedge of lime and a basil leaf.

royal blackthorn

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part pomegranate juice
  • champagne
  • pomegranate seeds.

Add a few pomegranate seeds to a champagne flute, then add sloe gin and pomegranate juice. Top with champagne.

west end negroni

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part gin
  • 1 part campari
  • 1 part vermouth

Stir ingredients with ice and garnish with a lemon twist.

bramble

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part gin
  • 1 part fresh lemon juice
  • 0.5 parts simple syrup (optional)

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Shake with ice and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Garnish with fresh or frozen blackberries/raspberries.

I like to move it

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part gin
  • 0.5 parts fresh squeezed lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla sugar

In a rocks glass, mix gin, lime juice and vanilla sugar. Stir well and fill glass with ice/crushed ice. Stir again and top with sloe gin.

  • 2 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.75 parts aperol
  • 1.25 parts fresh squeezed grapefruit juice

Shake with ice and strain into a coupe.

negroni vermiglio

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part amaro
  • 1 part campari

Stir ingredients in an ice filled collins glass. Top with soda and garnish with an orange peel.

alte liebe

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part gin
  • 0.75 parts lemon juice
  • 0.75 parts simple syrup
  • 0.75 parts fresh orange juice
  • ground cinnamon

Rim a rocks glass with cinnamon, fill with ice and set aside. Add gin, sloe gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and orange juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into cinnamon rimmed rocks glass. Garnish with an orange slice.

mojito

  • 2 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 10 basil leaves
  • 1 lime brown sugar
  • soda

hawthorn fizz

  • 1 part gin
  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.75 parts fresh lemon juice
  • 0.75 parts orgeat syrup

Shake ingredients and strain over ice in a highball glass. Top with soda. Garnish with a lemon twist.

lazy river

  • 1 part bourbon
  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 2 dashes orange bitters
  • grapefruit peel, for garnish

In a mixing glass, stir bourbon, sloe gin, and bitters with ice. Strain into a coupe and garnish with grapefruit peel.

the sloe gin spritz

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.75 parts lillet blanc
  • 0.5 parts fresh lemon juice
  • 3 dashes orange bitters
  • prosecco lemon twist, for garnish

Add pürspirits blackthorn, lillet blanc, and lemon juice to a large wine glass with plenty of ice. Top up with prosecco and garnish with a twist of lemon.

  • 1.5 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.5 parts dry vermouth
  • 0.5 parts sweet vermouth
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • lemon twist, for garnish

Stir all ingredients with ice. Strain into a coupe and garnish with a lemon twist.

sloe gin rickey

  • 1.5 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • juice of 1/2 lime
  • sparkling soda
  • lime wedge or lime twist for garnish

Combine blackthorn sloe gin and lime juice in an ice-filled highball or wine glass, fill with soda water, stir and garnish.

charlie chaplin

  • 1.5 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.75 parts fresh lime juice
  • 0.75 parts pür•likör marillen, apricot liqueur
  • orange peel, for garnish

Shake all ingredients with ice and double strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish with orange peel.

sloe 75

  • 1.5 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.25 parts fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • prosecco

Add blackthorn sloe gin and lemon juice to a champagne flute and top with prosecco. Zest an orange peel over the top and discard.

sloe gin tonic

  • 2.5 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 3-4 parts tonic water (to taste)
  • lemon wedge
  • 1 dash orange bitters

Add sloe gin and a dash of orange bitters to a rocks glass filled with ice. Top with tonic water and stir to combine. Garnish with a lemon wedge.

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part Don Ciccio Finocchietto
  • 1 part vodka
  • 0.5 parts lemon juice
  • 0.5 parts simple syrup
  • 2 parts blackberry purée

Shake ingredients with ice and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with rosemary.

rosemary fizz

  • 2 parts pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part limoncello
  • sparkling soda water
  • 2 rosemary sprigs for muddling & garnish

Strip the leaves from one of the sprigs of rosemary and place them in a cocktail shaker with the limoncello. Muddle gently. Add ice and the sloe gin and shake well. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice. Top with soda and garnish with a rosemary sprig.

  • 1 part gin
  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 1 part peppercorn syrup (see below)
  • 1 part passion fruit puree
  • 0.5 parts allspice dram

Combine all ingredients in a shaker. Dry shake and pour over cracked ice in a tiki mug. Garnish with 2 turns of a pepper mill filled with black peppercorns, orange twist and cherries.

For pepper syrup, place 20 black peppercorns and 20 Sichuan peppercorns on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Remove from the oven and place in a saucepan with a pint of water. Simmer for 10 minutes, then add a pint of sugar. Stir over low heat until sugar is completely dissolved then strain to remove peppercorns.

hedgerow sling

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.25 parts fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 3 mint leaves, crushed
  • dash of pürlikör elderflower liqueur
  • 2 parts organic unfiltered apple juice
  • fresh mint

Add all ingredients except the apple juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously, strain into a mason jar and top with the apple juice. Garnish with a mint sprig.

sloe berry cobbler

  • 1 part pürspirits blackthorn, sloe gin
  • 0.75 parts sherry
  • 0.5 parts fresh squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 dash cherry liqueur

Shake pürspirits blackthorn, sherry, freshly squeezed lemon juice and cherry liqueur in a cocktail shaker with ice, then pour into a highball glass filled with crushed ice and garnish with a mint sprig.
